BASIS: BATAVIA RUM

Named after Java’s 17th-century, capital. Batavia Arrack, or Indonesian Rum, is among the oldest-known distilled spirits and is a type of rum, distilled with fermented red rice. This makes for a fresh and malty finish.

GOLD FINISH: BOTANICALS

Inspired by Mata Hari’s Indonesian episode: distilled with cocoa, cardamom, pandan leaf (also known as ‘Asian Vanilla’ with a vanilla, slightly nutty flavor) and fresly grounded coffee.

MATA HARI: EYE OF DAWN

The infamous Mata Hari: Indian princess, courtesan or double agent? Before any of that, she was simply Margaretha Zelle – a Dutch woman fleeing a loveless marriage. But as Mata Hari (Indonesian for “eye of the dawn”), she became an exotic dancer – an unrivalled sensation in high-society Paris, Berlin and Milan. Everyone from admirals to princes fell for this femme fatale. But her dealings with people in high places while travelling the world in a time of war proved to be fatal. In 1917, she was shot for espionage. She was innocent.
